Design Trend to Expect in 2021
Trends are constantly changing and adapting as we grow and learn. At Glo Media, we’re embracing the ever-changing pace of digital marketing. With everyone and almost everything transitioning to being online, visual communication is tremendously influential more than ever.
Keep an eye out this year for the following design trends and think about how you can incorporate them into your own brand.
Classic Serif Fonts
Brands are going back to using serifs to build trust with their audience and customers. In typography, serif fonts are ones that have decorative strokes at the top or the bottom of a letter. Some well-known serif fonts you may know are Caslon, Garamond, and Times New Roman. Serif fonts are classic and elegant and are one of the oldest styles of typeface. These types of fonts give off a more serious and sophisticated tone. Some great examples of brands using serif fonts are Hinge and Wealthsimple.
Flat Icons
You might be thinking this sounds familiar and the reason is flat icons were a huge trend back in 2015. We can see that trends often resurface and this year flat icons are making a comeback. They’re great for the saying “less is more” and in 2021, we’ll be seeing more of this manifestation.
Geometric Shapes
In 2020, abstract and fluid shapes often inspired and influenced design choices. Geometric shapes allow for more flexibility in design layouts. The possibilities are endless when there’s a geometric shape for everything - patterns, motifs, and more.
Text Heavy Videos (Motion Graphics)
This form of visual communication is being popularized for its efficiency in production. Motion graphics also offer different creative directions without a need for a huge budget. The brand Slack is a great example of the heavy use of text and motion graphics.
Social Slide Decks
Whether you’re sharing helpful tips to support local small businesses, sharing your political views, shedding light on important social issues, people and brands are doing so through slide decks. These forms of content are more engaging and likely reshared and reposted when they’re well designed.
Data Visualization
As we continue to stress how our lives are mostly online now and our new normal, data is being shared constantly online. It makes sense that we’re now trying to make our numbers and facts engaging and visually appealing. The goal is to provide consumers with clear and concise information.
Muted Colours
A big trend in 2020, muted colours continue to thrive in 2021. They’re calming, look modern and refined, and they don’t feel dated. Muted colours are regular colours that have shades of white or black added. They give off natural and organic vibes, which aren’t going anywhere anytime soon!
